The Power of Rotator Cuff Therapy + Diagnostic Musculoskeletal Ultrasound

Dr. Charles Stevens DPT, CLT, a previous participant of the WCUI |Global Virtual Point-of-Care Musculoskeletal Ultrasound (POCUS MSK) course, recently released a case study on how point-of-care diagnostic ultrasound used alongside his physical therapy sessions helped with his patient care.

Dr. Stevens’ patient came in with shoulder pain that began initially after shoveling snow and persisted until she was referred to Dr. Stevens at Mobile Therapy Services. No imaging was provided along with the patient except for diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasounds that were performed by Dr. Stevens.

About the Case Study

In his case study, Dr. Stevens’ describes how ultrasound provided real-time imaging while prioritizing the patient’s comfortability through patient positioning and movement. On Day 1, he was able to sit the patient, have her test her grip strength, and get an ultrasound image of her right shoulder and surrounding fluid, thereby visualizing the patient’s pain points. On her day of discharge, after 3 months of physical therapy sessions, Dr. Stevens’ was able to see the progress the patient made in the ultrasound and confirm the reduction of surrounding fluid in the patient’s shoulder. Why Did Dr. Stevens Utilize Musculoskeletal Ultrasound?

Through musculoskeletal ultrasound, Dr. Stevens explains he can see impingement syndromes of the shoulder, meniscal tears of the knee, and other common orthopedic issues. In addition to having the ability to focus on patient comfort, he found ultrasound to be 1/17th of the cost of an MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging). Musculoskeletal ultrasound is also pain-free, uses sound waves, and does not produce radiation. And finally, there is an added benefit with having the ability to create images in real-time rather than waiting for labs to return and be assessed.
